Malaysian paintings became the focus of attention when over 200 distinguished guests tried to outbid each other to buy selected paintings at prices from as low as RM650 in the “Art For Life” - Henry Butcher Charity Art Auction 2009 held at Royal Selangor Golf Club on Saturday evening, 28th February 2009. The charity gala dinner was organised by Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers Sdn Bhd to raise funds for the National Cancer Society of Malaysia and the Lions Lyfe-Line Leukaemia Fund - a body established under the umbrella of the Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur (West).
Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers Sdn Bhd is a venture established to promote and enhance the position of local arts in Asia in general and Southeast Asia in particular through auctions and other creative marketing programmes. “Art For Life” was its inaugural art auction and the first ever held in Malaysia. It managed to promote over 50 established local artists over a three-day exhibition at RSGC culminating in a gala dinner cum charity auction.
His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, accompanied by Her Royal Highness the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Bainun were guests-of-honour. His Excellency Masahiko Horie theAmbassador of Japan to Malaysia, YAM Raja Dato’ Seri Azureen, YB Dato’ Seri Mohd. Salleh, Dr. Mohd Najib bin Ahmad Dawa the Director General of National Art Gallery of Malaysia and YB Tan Sri Dato’ Azman Hashim the chairman of AmBank Group were among the VIP guests who came to give their support.
The gala dinner was officially launched by HRH Sultan Azlan Shah who is the royal patron of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia.
In his welcome address, YB Dato’ Seri Kamal Hashim, Honorary Chairman of Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers Sdn Bhd, said that the current economic crisis has affected charity organisations badly and appealed for support from members of the public. With the growing number of cancer cases in the country and the escalating cost of treatment and medication, cancer and leukemia patients require assistance even more than before. He thanked the sponsors who have come forth to support the event namely DP Architects Sdn Bhd, Central Market Sdn Bhd, Admiral Cove Development Sdn Bhd, Kurnia Insurans (M) Bhd, PDI Designs & Associates Sdn Bhd, Anno Vision Advertising, Loh & Loh Construction Sdn Bhd, Bandar Eco Setia Sdn Bhd, Mr. Ng Leong Sing and YB Dato’ Jimmy Lim.
The event was made more special with paintings contributed by three children of The Expat Group-Garden International School community project - Azafia Yahya, Jessica Lim and Erika Kim, and two gifted autistic children - Nurulakhmal Abdul Rahman and Tan Seng Kit. Malaysian artist Tan Sik Yaw exhibited his talents with a live painting demonstration and his creation was then put up for auction.
The guests were kept on their toes all evening with paintings and exclusive merchandise from MyBatik and Habib Jewels that were up for grabs during several sessions of Dutch auction and raffle draws.
“Art For Life” has been actively promoted by media partners, The Expat Group, KL Lifestyle and MyBatik for the past two months since its inception. |
